What is College Now?

College Now is a program that partners New York City public schools with CUNY (City University of New York, our awesome public college system here in New York) to offer FREE COLLEGE CLASSES through which students EARN COLLEGE CREDIT. College Now classes are taught to high school students on college campuses by adjunct or full-time faculty. During the school year, College Now classes are offered in the afternoon (after the school day) or on the weekends. During the summer, they are often multiple times a week.

Who can take College Now?

Students become eligible to take College Now classes the summer after 10th grade, meaning they can first apply to take courses in the Spring of their 10th grade year. Courses also may have additional eligibility requirements, such as GPA or grades in specific courses (see below).

Students in younger grades cannot take College Now coursework, but are eligible to apply for STEM Research Academies.

5 reasons to take a class through College Now!

  1. Get prepared for a college learning environment. By taking classes through College Now, you can be prepared academically and socially for the college environment, as you will literally be taking a college class on a college campus. These skills will help you be successful as a college student!

  2. Earn college credit as a high school student. College Now classes are free but still earn you “college credit”, which can be later applied towards a college degree! This means that you don’t have to pay for that class as a college student (worth up to thousands of dollars). Keep in mind, the decision to accept College Now credits is based on the college you enroll at after you leave ICE. ICE also adds a “+1” to our GPA for each College Now class you take and receive a B or above!

  3. Explore interests and passions you can’t at ICE. College Now offers classes in areas that aren’t offered at many high schools and is a great way to explore academic interests and coursework that may not be offered at ICE, such as psychology, anthropology, computer science, business, media, etc.

  4. Show colleges you’re prepared for higher-level work. By taking college-level classes, you can demonstrate to colleges you are ready and prepared to do their work, which can help you in the college admissions process.

  5. … and don’t forget about the perks!  College Now students also get free books and supplies and access to college facilities such as the library. If you take a class on the weekend, they provide you with a MetroCard.

Right now, some applications are open for the FALL ‘24 but some are closed (including our partner colleges, BMCC + Baruch) but some are still open.
